A facility providing health care services to the Kitsumkalum First Nation community located in the heart of their traditional territory at the confluence of the Skeena and Kitsumkalum Rivers.

Historically Kitsumkalum First Nation's house front designs were a form of important building symbolism and communicated inherent messages of social, cultural, philosophical, and historical values. Their longhouses and all of the goods of their daily lives were made of western red cedar including its bark. The functionality and the cultural and historical values of significance were progressively transferred into the design solutions through a series of design charrettes with participation of community members.

LTA's role included programming and capital budget negotiations with Health Canada on behalf of Kitsumkalum First Nation plus full design and construction administration services. The project was constructed by Unitech Construction Management Ltd.

We at Kitsumkalum Health Centre feel that our new Health Building is reconnecting us to the land and culture.

The appearance of our building is beautiful with the use of wood inside and out. It appeals to the eye as it somewhat resembles what we used long ago in the making of longhouses.

Our office furniture coordinates with the colour of the wooden panels and beams which makes for a gorgeous finish. Having large wall-sized windows enhances the wood appearance and allows the various lighting from outside to enhance different shades to the structure. In the evening the outside lighting brightens up the wood and one can't help but be impressed. We find that the centre is supporting our culture and it allows us to support the community in moving forward with their health care needs.
